Student Council
Role and Purpose of the School Council at Scoil Mhuire

The School Council is a vital part of our primary school community, providing students with a voice and an opportunity to actively participate in shaping their school experience. Made up of representatives from 3rd to 6th class children, the council works together to discuss ideas, solve problems, and organise activities that benefit everyone in the school. Each representative brings ideas, suggestions, and concerns from their class to the council meetings, fostering a culture of inclusivity and collaboration.

By taking on leadership roles, our School Council members learn important skills such as teamwork, communication, and responsibility while helping to make our school a better place for all.

School Council Meetings

We believe that a good school council is one that represents the views of all, empowers students and inspires change.

These are some things that we do to make our school council effective:

  • Regular meetings with Ms Fraher
  • Good communication between representatives and their class.
  • Smaller groups (subcommittees) working on specific events or issues.
  • A monthly focus for each meeting driven by whole school surveys
  • School council members have a voice during the whole school assemblies
  • Celebrating successes with the whole school
  • Feedback to all staff through minutes from meetings that can then be used to inform decisions at a whole-school level.

Some topics that may come under discussion at school council meetings:

  • Fundraising
  • Lunchtime games and activities
  • Whole school initiatives - e.g: Promoting reading across the school
  • Friendship and kindness
  • Uniform
  • Health and safety
  • Extra - curricular activities
  • School rules
