In September a new Green Team was set up with the aim to deepen our awareness of our beautiful planet and come up with ideas on how to better take care of it.
From 1 st to 6 th classes, students put themselves forward to represent their respective classes on the Green Team. They presented their reasons as to why they should be chosen to their classmates, and 2 students from each class joined the team. Today there is an enthusiastic group of 28 pupils who meet in MS Greco’s Room 16 every Tuesday at lunchtime to discuss the Green Initiative of the week.
In October the team ran a very successful Toy Swap event. The idea was that children would bring in old games and toys from home that they no longer used, receive a special Toy Swap ticket, which they could then exchange for a toy of their choice at the event. Overall, the school community were delighted with the success of the event- which will likely become and annual endeavor.
Other ideas the Green Team have developed in the school include putting fun ‘Energy Monitor’ figurines in each classroom. This is a novel way to remind children to close doors and turn off electrical appliances when leaving the classroom.
Another successful initiative brought in is the ‘Reduce Lunch Packaging’ challenge. Starting last December, class representatives monitored the packaging waste in their lunchboxes on a random day. The aim was to reduce this class total month by month. If a class managed to do so, they could choose a reward- such as a No-Uniform-Day, Sit-Where-You-Like Day, No homework Day, go on a nature walk or a Pajama Day.
Most recently, the Green Team entered this year’s ‘Green School Art Competition’, the theme of which is Water is Life. With some incredible artists on the team, we have our Green fingers crossed waiting to see who wins.
