Pegasus Cup Final (31/05/2016)
Scoil Mhuire – 7
Terenure College – 4
(After Extra Time)
Video Highlights
This was a day that players, parents, students and teachers will never forget. The Scoil Mhuire lads made history in the school’s first year playing soccer by winning the prestigious “Pegasus Cup”. The venue was the historic Dalymount Park, the stands were full of the loud Scoil Mhuire faithful and the sun was shining. Surely something had to give? Well it didn’t! You will be doing well to find a more entertaining game of football again. It had everything – excitement, goals, drama, skill, pace, mistakes, bravery, hard (but fair) tackling and effort in abundance. Have a look at our photos below.
Scoil Mhuire started as the better side and had Terenure camped in their own half for the first ten minutes with some great possession football. Scoil Mhuire capitalised on this when a good strike by Anthony Nkosi was parried by the Terenure goalkeeper and the nippy Evan Colgan neatly finished the rebound.
What a start it was but the cheers didn’t last long as Terenure hit right back. The opposition played a very direct game and hit every ball on top of their dangerous number ten who managed to bag an equaliser before bundling the ball over the line for his second to put Terenure 2-1 up.
Most teams would have been on the ropes at this stage, however, anyone who has seen this Scoil Mhuire side play before Tuesday would have known the character they possess. This shone through when Sami Clarke took responsibility and drove at the Terenure defence before rifling a daisy cutter past the helpless keeper to level the game again (one of four times the sides would be level on the day). Both teams were starting to tire and they were happy to see half time.
Alex Hickey and Evan Wynne replaced both Luke Cahill and Toby Nnadozie respectively who had played brilliantly and run themselves into the ground. The game was end to end again with neither team giving an inch. With fifteen minutes to go a piece of brilliance from Alex Hickey saw him break through the compact midfield and he played the most exquisite ball to Sami Clarke who finished neatly to put Scoil Mhuire 3-2 to the good. This was after trojan work by Evan Wynne down the right wing.
Terenure soon replied with another equaliser before the management team of Mr. Kirwan, Mr. Ellis and Noel Shanahan decided to bring on fresh legs. Playmaker Dylan Rankin replaced the excellent Anthony Nkosi, the ever reliable Eoghan Daly came on for the hardy Daniel Nulty and the final substitution saw the no nonsense Nathan Weafer-McGovern take the place of the influential Aryan Rawat. Evan Colgan put the Airlie Heights lads 4-3 up with minutes left on the clock after a move which started with super keeper Eoin Harrington.
Scoil Mhuire were holding on for their lives in the final moments of the game and a deflected shot by a Terenure midfielder saw the ball fall to the feet of their number ten who buried the ball past Harrington. It ended 4-4 after normal time which meant the lads faced an extra ten minutes of play.
Terenure came into extra time with momentum after equalising so late in the game but the Scoil Mhuire boys showed once again that nothing fazes them. Straight from the tip off the ball was played to Joey O’Sullivan on the left wing who took on his marker and delivered a perfect cross which was headed home by our fox in the box Evan Colgan – 5-4!!
Scoil Mhuire were flying now and Benji Ubaekwe and Reece Lamphiere made it their business to stop their number ten from impacting the game in extra time. We added two more goals with the aid of an o.g. and Evan Colgan bagging his fourth.
The scenes at full time were something to behold with players, fans, parents and teachers celebrating on the pitch and in the stands. A day filled with so many memories for the boys with the main one being Sami Clarke holding the Pegasus Cup aloft.

I would like to say a huge thank you to the parents association who funded the supporters buses from the school and back. It was greatly appreciated and meant that so many children could enjoy the occasion free of charge.
I would also like to thank the parents who supported the team all year and provided lifts to matches. This is really appreciated.
Thank you to Mikey Grimes and Alan McGovern for sorting dressing rooms, nets and pitch markings in Airlie Heights.
And a special thank you to Noel Shanahan and Mr. Ellis who helped me on the line throughout the year. Even if Mr. Ellis did just turn up for the final!!!
