The Junior Boys footballers got their season off to a win after a terrific display against Our Lady of Good Counsel in the nearby Sarsfields Park in Lucan.
The opening few minutes were a tense affair as both teams struggled to settle, however Scoil Mhuire managed to put an early point on the board from a wonderful strike by Charlie Keher who scored from a very tight angle near the sideline. Brendan Ruddy followed up that effort with a point of his own after being set up by a great passing move between Cian Buckley and Luke Finnerty. In the very next play Good Counsel hit back scoring a point of their own.
Scoil Mhuire began to settle and chalked up some great scores, much of the build up beginning in our defence with a series of quick kick outs from our in-form goalkeeper, Eoin O’Mahony. Brendan Ruddy and Charlie Keher added a point each and Cian Buckley scored a terrific point, direct from a 45. Good Counsel had their fair share of possession but couldn’t make it count because of excellent defensive pressure our backs, particularly Ishaan Rawat and Philip Kane. At half time we had built a lead of 0-5 to 0-1.
Scoil Mhuire began the second half in great fashion with two early points from Charlie Keher. Soon however Good Counsel began to find their stride and kicked over two points without reply. This spurred Scoil Mhuire in further action and they were rewarded a short time later with a wonderful goal from substitute and debutant Aidan Duffy. This knocked the wind out of the opposition and Brendan Ruddy landed a point and another goal, scored after an excellent break from the back by Mark Gormley.
However, just as in the first half, Good Counsel began to find their range and two more points before Brendan Ruddy responded with one of his own. The last five minutes of the game belonged to the opposition and only for some solid goalkeeping and great defending from Cian Hyland and the rest of the backs we could have been in trouble. Good Counsel added a consolation goal about two minutes from time but there was no pegging back the lead Scoil Mhuire had built up.
Scoil Mhuire ran out 2-9 to 1-5 winners. Well done to all our players on a terrific display and roll on next week!
