Our senior footballers got off to a great start to the season by winning the “B” final in the annual Lucan Sarsfields blitz for local schools. In the group stage we came up against a very strong and skilful St Mary’s Boys’ team who had too much power for us. However great wins against St John the Evangelist and Gaelscoil Eiscir Riada qualified us for the “B” final where we faced Gaelscoil Naomh Pádraig.
At half time in the final things didn’t look good as we trailed by 2-5 to 1-0. The margin could have been greater if it wasn’t for some heroic defending by Cian Hyland and Ishaan Rawat, and some great goalkeeping by Mark Gormley .A brilliant goal just before half time by debutant Brendan Ruddy gave Scoil Mhuire a glimmer of hope for the second half.
The second half saw Scoil Mhuire completely dominate and they scored 2-4 without reply to end up deserving winners by 2 points.
As well as the boys already mentioned , there were some outstanding performances from Luke Monaghan, Charlie Keher, Jack Butler, Jack Colgan, Phillip Kane, Cian Buckley and Ben O ‘Toole. Dylan Knowles, Lachlan Hill and Dean White were very much to the fore. Harry Day and Conall Chambers made a big impact when introduced and Luke Finnerty starred in goal and in Midfield.
There were some rumours that the stirring comeback in the final was a result of threats of extra homework and detention but these have been strongly denied. We never give weekend homework in Scoil Mhuire!
As usual, the blitz was extremely well organised and our appreciation goes to Johnny and all the refs and all who helped organise the day.
Many thanks also to all the parents who came along to support.
Senior game on Thursday next 20th against Scoil Lorcáin, Palmerstown in Lucan (venue to be confirmed) at 3pm.
