There has been a revival of the craft of knitting over the last few years. Celebrities including Julia Roberts, Winona Ryder, Dakota Fanning, and Cameron Diaz have all been seen knitting. Knitting develops fine-motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and reading and math skills. Since both hands hold needles and each hand has its own job, both sides of the brain are engaged.
3rd class have recently started knitting and we have a very busy classroom of children who mentor one another, share conversation while working productively, encourage one another, and enjoy the calming yet challenging task of knitting.
The children are busy knitting headbands and wrist bands and some children have moved onto scarves for their “Build a Bears”.
