There was great excitement in Scoil Mhuire yesterday as our camogie team prepared to do battle in the semi-final of the championship. The team had won all but 1 game this season with some impressive results and performances and had truly earned their place in the semis. To get to the final in Croke Park they would have to get past the undefeated Scoil Maelruain.

The sliotar was thrown in at 3pm in Tyman Park, Tallaght and the action was end to end right from the off. Scoil Maelruain opened the scoring within the first minute but three minutes later Scoil Mhuire were on level terms with a wonder goal from the edge of the large square.

Both teams pressed hard for the remainder of the half but it was Scoil Maelruain that had the upper hand scoring twice more before the break. In the second half Scoil Maelruain kept up the pressure with a couple of early scores as Scoil Mhuire fought hard to get back into it. Later in the half Scoil Mhuire started piling on the pressure but just couldn’t convert, hitting four wides in close succession followed by two wonderful saves from their goalkeeper.

In the end there just wasn’t enough time for a comeback and Scoil Maelruain ran out winners and booked their place in the final. Naturally enough there were disappointed faces right around Tyman. However the girls had a terrific season. Just three short seasons ago Scoil Mhuire failed to win a game in the Camogie league. Who would have thought just a couple of years later they’d be battling for a place in the final. With that rate of progress they’ll be champions before we know it. Roll on next season!
