February 2015 Newsletter

In February our senior classes participated in Engineers’ Week – the two 6th classes spent a day in Intel, for a workshop entitled ‘A Rough Guide to Engineering’. Two engineers from Irish Rail came to the school to give a very informative presentation to Ms Ryan’s class, and a parent who is an engineer came in to present a workshop to Ms Reilly’s 5th class.

Both our 6th classes have been busy preparing for their Confirmation on March 6th. This week they attended St Patrick’s church for their Ceremony of Light. There will be a meeting on March 19 at 7.30pm in the school for the parents of children celebrating their First Penance.

Our Green Schools is gathering momentum with Feet First Fortnight, where we are counting the number of children walking into Woodview Hts every day. We are still recycling batteries, so please send in any old batteries with your child.

If you must drive into Woodview Hts/Airlie Hts please be mindful of local residents, other road users and most importantly any school children attempting to cross roads. And if you use the drive-thru system in the school grounds PLEASE DRIVE SLOWLY.

Our courtyard garden is being revamped right now. This will eventually become an outdoor learning space/performance area drawing inspiration from the local environment and beyond.  And before Easter some children will be involved in designing the mosaic pathway.

We always promote a healthy lifestyle, combining activity and responsible eating, so every Friday we want to see as many different fruits in the lunch boxes – the more exotic the better. This we hope will help our Cross Country runners as they compete against schools from all over the South Dublin County Council region. Starting in February we are sent a team of boys and girls from 3rd to 6th to Griffeen Valley Pk to race. We had some great results on the day, and the support from the parents was really appreciated – the next race day is Wednesday, March 11 at the same venue.

Staying with sport we had the finals of the 5th/6th class indoor basketball leagues this week, and on an electrically charged finals day the winners were the Hyper Baskets captained by Aaron Fitzpatrick and the Doughnuts won the girls captained by Sarah Porumb.

And finally, Ms Ní Núnáin’s 3rd class and Ms Reilly’s 5th enjoyed a very creative morning this week composing comics ‘as Gaeilge’ when a workshop was hosted by ‘Coimicí Gael’ in their classes.
